Responsibilities and Qualifications
Under the direction of the Environmental Services Supervisor, performs a wide variety of environmental and operational support tasks. Activities include patient room cleaning/housekeeping, patient room checkouts and delivery of supplies and materials throughtout designeated areas of the hospital and Doctors building. Works cooperatively with others as part of a team and recognizes the importance of group goals. Responds to patient and visitor requests within authorized scope of knowledge and skills. Leads and works as a part of the floor maintenance crew in any given area of hospital and doctors building . Acts as a preceptor for new staff and new procedural changes in the department. Directs and assigns staff in absence of manager or supervisors, able to assume responsibility for day to day operations and schedules. Carrys out major housecleaning assignments. Performs all duties and responsibilities in a manner consistent with our Mission, Values, and Mercy Service Standards.
a. Infection control, unit specific precautions. Continually practices Universal Precautions in all areas. Follows infection control guidelines when cleaning equipment. Effectively implements isolation procedures related to cleaning a specific isolation area.
b. Environmental management: Maintains clean environment; Identifies and removes any hazards or potential
hazards/problems; Follows procedures for hazardous materials spills; reporting and clean-up.
c. Patient’s rights protection: Complies with hospital policy on confidentiality; Assist with maintaining privacy while cleaning: patient room door closure; knock when entering patient room.
d. Fall prevention: Places signs appropriately when cleaning; maintains safe environment when mopping by preventing excess water on floors.
Coordination of Services
a. Quality management: Effectively cleans assigned areas according to departmental procedure; patient rooms, ancillary, offices, etc.; Assist in maintaining clear hallways and exits.
b. Supply management: inventories and maintains stock condiments, snacks, and patient refrigerator stock; Replenishes all rooms with appropriate towels, soaps, gloves, needle boxes, etc.
c. Scheduling: Leads and directs staff in absence of manager.
a. Stripping/refinish floors, carpet shampoo, and major housecleaning.
b. Able to function in all general daily housekeeping duties.
c. Vacuum and compactor management. Knowledge of proper use of vacuum and minor repair of the equipment; Demonstrates proper procedure in using compactor.
a. Coordinate with managers or supervisors appropriate days and times to do major housecleaning.
b. Schedules and arranges projects in absence of manager or supervisors.
c. Analyze the necessary steps needed to strip and refinish floors, maintain a soft scrub, extract carpets, or clean with seco pads.
d. Rearranges staff and duties to meet the necessary requirements for day when there is a staffing shortage.
a. Telephone and beeper management: Utilizes communication system for increased accessibility.
b. Customer service/guest relations: Always friendly to patients and visitors; Offers directions and support to visitors; Seeks patient care giver when appropriate
c. Decision-making support: Seeks appropriate direction when needed; Able to work independently; Completes all forms needed for maintenance repairs, and pest control-routing to appropriate department
a. Tube system management.
b. Trouble shoot mechanical equipment in use, beds, C.S. equipment, vacuums, carpet extractors, etc.
Because you’re committed to excellence, you understand the importance of being properly prepared for your role at Mercy. That’s why you’ll bring to your role the right set of qualifications:
Experience: Two to three years housekeeping experience as floor tech required.
Other: Basic reading, writing, and math. Demonstrates good communication and decision making skills.
Preferred Education: High School diploma.
