Responsibilities and Qualifications
Performs specialized procedures on patients resulting in diagnostic images for interpretation by the radiologist and for providing the patient care essential to these procedures. Performs duties and responsibilities in a manner consistent with our Mission, Values, and Mercy Service Standards.
a. Locates and properly operates oxygen, suction, blood pressure and other essential patient care equipment.
b. Consistently observes patients before, during and after procedures, making and using appropriate immobilization devices.
c. Appropriately transfers patients to/from stretchers, wheelchairs and on/off procedure table, giving care to IV’s and other appliances.
d. Safely operates all equipment and immediately reports malfunctions, as well as locates all emergency switches.
e. Consistently demonstrates understanding of emergency procedures and radiation safety.
f. Assures that all data entered/retrieved from physician’s orders and/or computer system is accurate, verifying accuracy prior to procedure.
Coordination of Services:
a. Reviews orders for diagnosis and prescriptions, appropriately scheduling patient and department resources for services.
b. Performs all procedures according to protocol stated in procedure manual, unless directed otherwise by radiologist/physician, presenting completed procedure to radiologist/ physician for interpretation.
c. Collaborates with staff members and physicians to assure delivery of optimal patient care at all times.
d. Demonstrates ability to revise department schedule and staff assignments to meet patient and physician needs and maintain a smooth functioning department with limited rooms and equipment.
e. Assumes responsibility for portions of quality improvement program. Understands all phases. Keeps all documentation current and available, following through with any problem areas.
f. Assists in department orientation program as needed, assuming responsibility of training new staff. g. Assists staff members in keeping orientation program up to , contributing to development of educational needs, supervision and evaluation of radiology students.
g. Evaluates diagnostic procedure for appropriateness, taking corrective measures if needed, and screening for previous procedures.
a. Provides diagnostic CT scans for interpretation by radiologist.
b. Performs exams in OR including use of C-arm and Rand F room 25.
c. Demonstrates ability to perform exams in NICU, ICU, SNF, and ER including exams on trauma patients.
d. Correctly administers contrast materials for patient exams.
a. Greets patients by name, introduces self, provides patients with thorough explanation of procedures, and efficiently performs procedure.
b. Uses good judgment with add-on cases to meet patient needs and department needs without disrupting schedule.
c. Understands safe and proper machine operation, and is knowledgeable of machine emergency procedures and radiation safety procedures, reviewing as needed or at least yearly.
d. Demonstrates technical proficiency in producing diagnostic images with the ability to recognize technical abnormalities, selecting the appropriate techniques for each procedure, and positioning patients according to department protocol.
e. Prepares/stocks rooms for various exams, checks equipment between patients, orders supplies as needed, and cleans room and equipment between patients, including patient waiting area.
f. Effectively alters routine procedures when patient condition indicates, making appropriate changes on requisitions, faxing exams timely, and submitting charge sheets when indicated, filled out correctly.
f. Assists in the transportation of patients/specimens/films, processes films, operates CDS, and refills chemicals as needed.
g. Works fair share of on-call and weekends, remaining able and willing to adjust personal schedule in case of fluctuations in workload or departmental need, and displaying flexibility by willingly working in any area or changing scheduled work hours.
h. Maintains alignment with ETO policy by clocking in and out at scheduled time, no earlier than six minutes before/after scheduled shift, and eliminating (when possible) overtime on a weekly basis.
a. Routinely questions patient/family members before a procedure to obtain pertinent patient history, including always questioning female patients as to whether they may be pregnant or nursing.
b. Monitors equipment operation and alerts appropriate personnel of any problems in a timely manner.
c. Keeps managers informed of any issues, problems or situations requiring attention or follow up.
d. Recognizes the need to assist other staff members during the busy times throughout the day, asking what needs to be done and readily volunteering in other areas including office, scheduling, etc.
e. Shares all relevant information at end of shift, reporting both verbally and written when both are possible.
f. Assures all communications regarding patient care are timely and appropriate, recognizing patient crises and initiates appropriate measures.
a. Understands applications and effectively uses hospital and department computer systems.
b. Enters, saves, prints and retrieves information from systems; uses barcodes to improve efficiency and accuracy, ensuring that all procedure charges are properly entered/revised in system and/or submitted to appropriate person throughout shift.
c. Performs equipment quality control testing as required.
d. Maintains working knowledge of new technology, accepting responsibility for keeping informed of current department practices.
e. Initiates appropriate downtime procedures when necessary.

Certifications: Must be eligible for ARRT registration, with receipt of ARRT within 6 months of hire.
Preferred Certifications: ARRT registration preferred.
