    Responsibilities and Qualifications

    Qualifications:

    Because you’re committed to excellence, you understand the importance of being properly prepared for your role at Mercy. That’s why you’ll bring to your role the right set of qualifications:

    Education: Graduated from an accredited Surgical Technology program
    Licensure:
    Experience: At least one year clinical experience and one year of employment as a Surgical Technologist 1
    Certifications: BLS required.
    Other: Certification as Surgical Technologist or CST

    Performs the primary function of a Surgical Technologist in the Operating Room. Prepares and maintains the sterile field and instruments for surgical cases. Counts according to policy in conjunction with a registered nurse (RN). Demonstrates accountability by: 1) maintaining continuing education relative to practice, 2) conducting self in a professional manner, 3) adheres to our mission, values, and mercy service standards, 4) demonstrates competence. A Surgical Technologist cannot perform procedures that require licensure.

    Performs the primary function of a Surgical Technologist in the Operating Room and is certified. In addition to the job description of a Surgical Technologist 1, has greater than one year of experience.

    Safety/Risk Management:

    1. Adheres to Counting Policy: Instruments; Narcotics; Sponges; Needles/sharps
    2. Follows policy/procedure for Incident Report/ Sentinel Events.
    3. Follows Confidentiality Policy/Procedure: Keeps patients covered, Does not discuss patient information except for patient care;
    4. Complies with Infection Prevention Guidelines: Performs surgical scrub using aseptic technique according to policy/procedure; Compliance with Universal precautions, wears gloves appropriately, wears safety glasses, Keeps doors closed; Proper disposal of surgical specimens; Proper disposal of sharps/biohazard material
    5. Creates a Safe Environment: Keeps sharps contained on field (keeps needles and blades in container); Uses good body mechanics (lifting pans, shifting body weight as needed); Keeps bovie in holder; Ensures safety of operative team on field; Notifies team members of breaks in technique.
    6. Respects patient/guest’s personal property and handles according to policy/procedure.
    7. Adheres to specific department safety regulations: Growth and Development; Laser; Electrocautery; Radiation safety; Sterilization ( attest, autoclaves); Moving of equipment
    8. Performs equipment safety checks.
    9. Complies with patients rights/regulations: Patient aware of procedure; Patient comfortable with process; Knows patient Bill of Rights; Prevents unnecessary exposure of patient.
    10. Participates in Universal Protocol, ie Time Out, Sign Out procedures
    11. Transfers, without administering, drugs within the sterile field
    12. Conducts themselves as a professional role model for members of the health care team.
    13. Has completed 20 CEUs
    14. Active in hospital or department wide development and teaching of safety practices ie. Shared Governance or other departmental committees
    15. Assists in the planning and implementation of guidelines to meet department and hospital safety goals.

    Coordination of Services:

    1. Functions as a preceptor for new coworkers
    2. Freely shares clinical knowledge and skills with others in an approachable manner.
    3. Has ability to organize and prioritize, while being mindful of equipment cost and necessity
    4. Anticipates problems and intervenes appropriately to prevent/minimize impact.
    5. Independently identifies an actual or potential emergency situation and intervenes safely.

    Primary Aspects:

    1. Recognizes missing or incomplete case items and effectively communicates to their resolution with OR Supervisor or SPD.
    2. Assists in the development of new standards, policies and procedures in response to identified needs and workflow.
    3. Sound knowledge in principles and techniques to scrub cases in all surgical specialties.
    4. Adequately performs n a float role when needed .
    5. Has specific knowledge of patient positioning
    6. Develops a personal plan for professional improvement and advancement with active pursuit
    7. Serves as a resource to Level 1 and II Surgical Technologists.
    8. Functions as a patient advocate
    9. Demonstrates specific knowledge of procedure and surgeon needs prior to case

    Communication Management:

    1. Independently communicates in a manner which permits and resolves conflicts.
    2. Demonstrates a willingness to be a team member and to work both collaboratively and independently.
    3. Implements an individualized student or new coworker orientation program.
    4. Freely shares clinical knowledge and skills with others in an approachable manner.

    Technology:

    1. Demonstrates competence in initiating and maintaining use of routine equipment and procedures.
    2. Demonstrates competence in assisting physicians with diagnostic and therapeutic interventions, except any and all tasks that fall within the scope of a licensed practitioner.
    3. Performs technical skills relative to specific specialties i.e., assembling instrumentation and equipment (retractors, power equipment, etc.)
    4. Assists in evaluation of new products, equipment, policies, procedures and standards: Fills out appropriate paper work to assist with decisions.
    5. Communicate needs for changes to surgeon preference cards.
